Rudolf Steiner: "In the saying that Christ trod on and crushed the head of the serpent (70) we find a profound expression of esotericism. The serpent's head is mere wisdom; this must be overcome. True wisdom lies in the heart; this is why the serpent's head must be trodden underfoot. In the Hercules-Saga (71) the same truth has already been expressed. He kills the Lernaean Hydra, whose head always grows anew. Mere Manas will always come again. Hercules must keep the blood at a distance (Kama), then the Hydra will be conquered. Blood came into the Earth with the Mars-Wisdom (Kama-Manas)."
Luke 10:17-24
And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.
And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:
For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
"I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!" — Luke 12:49-50
Rudolf Steiner: "We have become too used to passing people by and not concerning ourselves with what they are actually doing, their actual lives. We must learn to really concern ourselves with human souls, to show real interest in them."
Rudolf Steiner: "Today there are already enough people whose hearts bleed to see these conditions — which, though necessary, will only take effect in the right way if we fully understand them. The impulses for new universal action must be consciously drawn from our heart's blood. What arises by itself is alienation of individuals from each other, and in response we must consciously endeavor to let flow what is needed from human hearts. Difficulties await every single soul in the fifth post-Atlantean epoch, and only by overcoming them will we meet and engage with the trials through which the consciousness soul can be developed."
Since 1981 Darlene and I have lived at the headquarters of the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy, in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. Previously the site was the Kilroe Seminary of the Sacred Heart. There's a chapel in the driveway of our yard, fifty feet away from where I'm sitting, with the words BEHOLD THE HEART carved in wood above a stone altar.
