Rudolf Steiner: "Goethe's statement that art is a manifestation of hidden laws of nature that would otherwise never be expressed is entirely incomprehensible for our time, though a few people may imagine they understand it. Our age holds fast to the most external and abstract natural laws that are based on even more abstract mathematical foundations; it will not countenance any deeper understanding of reality that goes beyond a purely mathematical way of looking at things. It is therefore no wonder that our age has lost the living element of soul which can sense what is really at work in the cosmos as a whole and what must flow to us from the cosmos and all its workings if art is to come into being."
